The University of Rochester Department of Modern Languages and Cultures invites applications for a 2-year Visiting Assistant Professor of German beginning in Fall 2024. The field of specialization is open, but we particularly encourage those who work in one or more of the following fields to apply: Postcolonial and Transnational Studies, Ethnic Studies, Critical Theory, LGBTQ+ Studies, and Gender Studies. The course load is 2/2 and includes required courses for the German major and minor as well as elective courses. The candidate must be fluent in both German and English, and a PhD in German Studies or a related field is required. If ABD, a dissertation defense date must be provided, and the candidate would be hired as an Instructor rather than as a Visiting Assistant Professor.

In the cover letter, the candidate should demonstrate the following: the ability to teach a wide range of courses at all levels in both German and English, a strong commitment to program-building and curriculum design, strong and diverse research interests and a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion as a sustained practice that is integrated into one’s approaches to teaching and research.
