The Department of German at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a tenure-stream Beginning to Advanced Assistant Professor in German Studies to begin on September 1, 2024, pending budgetary approval. The teaching load is four 3-credit courses in a two-term academic year (two courses in the fall semester, and two courses in the spring semester). We seek a candidate with expertise in Diversity Studies as they pertain to the German-speaking world, with a particular focus on gender and sexuality. Period of specialization open post-1750 and all forms of cultural production welcome (i.e. textual, audio-visual). Demonstrated interest in questions of race, ethnicity, and other markers of marginalization is required. Other academic interests preferably include one or more of the following: European Culture Studies, Digital Humanities, Bioethics, and related fields and methodologies. Excellence in undergraduate teaching at all levels in German and English is required for participation in the German language and in the general education curriculum. The willingness to develop courses for co-listing with other programs and departments in the humanities and social sciences is also welcome. Near-native knowledge of and fluency in German is a minimum requirement. A Ph.D. in German studies or a related field is required by the time of employment.
