Assistant Professor of Composition and Rhetoric and Director of Composition

The School of Humanities and English Program at The University of Southern Mississippi invite applications for a tenure-track position in composition and rhetoric to begin Fall 2024. The successful candidate will direct the first-year composition program and teach undergraduates and a graduate course in writing and pedagogy.


The first-year composition program at The University of Southern Mississippi is committed to fostering student engagement through reading and writing and to providing students with strategies and resources for communicating across academic, professional, and public settings. Our composition courses play an important role in equipping students for success and helping establish a culture of writing across the university. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to teaching first-year writing and diverse student populations.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities 

  1. Teach two courses per semester, including a graduate course on writing and pedagogy
  2. Review, revise, and/or develop composition curriculum (both traditional and online) as needed
  3. Conduct program assessment
  4. Mentor graduate writing instructors and collaborate with other English faculty, including composition faculty, on mentoring graduate instructors and on various aspects of the composition program curriculum
  5. Schedule teaching assignments across the composition curriculum in light of program needs and in collaboration with leadership
  6. Work collaboratively across the English program, Student Success, and General Education Committees, and with other university stakeholders
  7. Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications 

A Ph.D. by the time of appointment in English with an emphasis in composition and rhetoric or related field.  Evidence of an active research agenda and a commitment to teaching and service.

 

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with writing program administration, curriculum, and assessment.

Experience with digital and online pedagogies, research, and technologies in composition and rhetoric.
