The Department of English in the College of Arts, Languages & Letters at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa invites applicants for a 9-month, tenure-track, full-time assistant professorship, to begin Fall 2024, pending availability of funds. The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa is a leading institution for scholarship and creative work focused on Hawaiʻi, Asia, and Oceania. The fundamental mission of the Department of English is to develop students’ critical reading, writing, and creative skills through the study of various literatures in the English language, composition and rhetoric, and creative writing, with a particular emphasis on the cultural diversity of our location in the Pacific. Our faculty members are committed to quality research and scholarship, generous public service, and exemplary teaching. We are looking for a talented creative writer working primarily in fiction who will teach Creative Writing classes and advise students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, maintain an active publishing profile, and support the department’s mission through engaged service. Duties and Responsibilities:

Teach all levels of undergraduate, MA-, and PhD- courses in Creative Writing (Fiction), and other courses based on the needs of the department;

Advise, supervise, and mentor graduate and undergraduate students.

Maintain an active professional practice in area(s) of specialization;

Participate in graduate committees;

Participate in departmental and university service;

Other duties as assigned by the Chair.
Minimum Qualifications:
-
MFA, PhD, or equivalent degree in English, Creative Writing (Fiction), or a closely related field from a college or university of recognized standing. All requirements for the degree must be completed by August 2024;

A minimum of one book under contract from a nationally recognized press;

Demonstrated success in teaching and service;
-
Ability to develop and teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels;

Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with students, faculty, staff, and administration.
Desirable Qualifications:
-
Experience in teaching multiple genres;
-
Demonstrated speciality in a secondary creative writing genre such as creative nonfiction, poetry, graphic narrative, hybrid and/or multilingual forms, literary translation;

Experience in literary journal editing/publishing;

Ability to teach classes in literature;

Creative work and/or teaching interest in one or more of the following areas: speculative fiction; folklore/fairy tales; Filipinx or Filipinx American literature; literatures of Hawai‘i; Asian American literature; literatures of the Pacific; Indigenous literatures; literatures of the Black Diaspora; US Latinx literatures;

Demonstrated ability to support the university’s mission of diversity, equity and inclusion.
