The English Department at Stonehill College, in conjunction with the Center for the Study of Race, Equity, and Social Justice (CRESJ), invites applicants for a tenure-track appointment in Postcolonial Literatures and Cultures, to begin August 15, 2024.
This position is part of a College cluster hire, in conjunction with the Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity, and Social Justice (CRES), of three tenure-track faculty specializing in topics related to race, ethnicity, and social justice in their respective fields. We welcome applications from scholars whose work in Postcolonial Studies engages substantially in contemporary efforts to decolonize the English literary canon and curriculum, and whose teaching enjoins students to understand global anglophone literatures and cultures within transnational contexts. Secondary fields of interest are open, but we particularly encourage candidates with sub-specialties in any of the following: critical race and ethnicity studies, literatures and cultures of the Black Diaspora, Black feminist theory, and queer of color critique.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
The 3/3 teaching load includes first-year writing-intensive literature courses (topic and period to be determined by the faculty member), and upper-level courses on postcolonial literatures and cultures, that reflect the faculty member’s areas of specialization and interest, while aligning with the needs of the English Department and CRES. The successful candidate will be able to provide an inclusive learning environment for undergraduates at all levels—from first-year students across the disciplines to advanced English majors— and will join a vital and collegial community of scholars while having a significant role in defining and realizing the potential of CRES’s interdisciplinary mission to engage in the “critical study of race and ethnicity in order to understand social justice in the broadest transnational and global terms.”
Education and Experience
Ph.D. in hand at the time of appointment, plus a teaching record commensurate with career stage.
Interested applicants should submit a cover letter that addresses their research and teaching experience, provides examples of courses they would propose to offer at Stonehill, and describes how they would contribute to the mission of the Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity, and Social Justice via the URL link. The application should also include a curriculum vitae, a writing sample of no more than twenty pages, and a one-page philosophy of undergraduate teaching and mentoring. Preference will be given to applications received by January 5, 2024.
