Division/Department Information

The First Year Writing Program within the Institute for Core Studies is seeking applications for an Assistant Professor position teaching first-year composition to a diverse undergraduate population. All St. John's University students are required to take English Composition, and the First-Year Writing program is responsible for designing and teaching the curriculum for this course. All faculty design their own courses, which are connected by a shared set of learning objectives. Our faculty meet with students for one-on-one conferences periodically throughout the semester. The candidate will join a program committed to portfolio-based assessment, multimodal composition, and inclusive pedagogical practices.

Responsibilities

The position entails teaching three First Year Writing courses per semester, in addition to a rigorous schedule of individual conferences with students. An active research agenda and service to the University are expected.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have completed a Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition or a related field by the time of appointment; although MFAs with experience teaching English composition may be considered. All candidates should demonstrate teaching excellence; have a record of publication related to pedagogy, composition, and/or rhetoric; show evidence of ongoing research production; and show a commitment to early college students. Areas of specialization might include cultural rhetorics, ethnographic research, digital writing, Critical Race Theory, queer theory, and/or feminisms.
