Description of Work Unit
Through scholarship and teaching in languages, literatures, and cultures, the Department of World Languages & Cultures at WSU creates knowledge and promotes a culture of inquiry that encompasses student learning, faculty research, and community outreach. Position Summary
The Department of World Languages & Cultures invites applications for a Tenure-track Assistant Professor of Spanish Translation and Interpretation with an active research agenda in the theory, practice and teaching of Translation and Interpreting Studies. This is a nine-month, tenure-track appointment to begin July 1, 2024. We seek candidates who demonstrate a strong commitment to undergraduate education and the needs of a diverse student body in the context of an open enrollment environment.

Job Duties:
Position Duties
This tenure-track position includes a full-time undergraduate teaching load of 12 hours per semester, with expectations of original publication, student advising, and participation in departmental, university, and service committees. The successful candidate should expect to teach applied and theoretical courses (face-to-face or online) at all levels of the undergraduate curricula such as translation and interpreting, Spanish language, Spanish for the Professions, and/or linguistics. The successful candidate should also expect to collaborate with colleagues to expand our current translation program in the department and assist the department in outreach and recruitment, including developing cooperative relations with language service industries.

Required Qualifications:
Required Qualifications

 

  • Ph.D. or equivalent, with specialization in Spanish Translation and Interpretation Studies or related field, from an accredited institution. ABD candidates may be considered for the position, contingent on the degree being completed by June 30, 2024.
  • Experience in teaching ES<>EN T&I courses, as well as Spanish language courses at the undergraduate level.
  • Native or near-native proficiency in Spanish and English.

 


Preferred Qualifications:
Preferred Qualifications

 

  • Demonstrated industry experience in language services and Computer-assisted Translation tools and other technologies.
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching with technology and developing online courses.
  • Interest in serving heritage language students and ability to integrate heritage language teaching methodologies into a T&I curriculum.
  • Demonstrated interest in applied humanities and community engagement.
