POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Department of European Languages and Studies at the University of California-Irvine invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Teaching with Potential for Security of Employment in Italian. The successful candidate will lead and direct the Italian language program, teach Italian language at all levels, and contribute courses to the Italian minor and the major in European Studies. Duties include teaching six courses over three academic quarters per year and engaging in a research, publication, and professional development agenda that supports the teaching goals of the position. Direction of the Italian language program entails supervising other instructors in Italian and fostering coordination and cooperation with other programs in the department.

Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated training, university-level teaching experience, and innovation in Italian language teaching and the area of second-language acquisition; a commitment to diversity and equity conducive to teaching UCI's majority minority student body; a record of research and scholarly productivity in any additional area of Italian studies; and a commitment to the administration of language programs. Competence in another language taught in the department is highly desirable, as is the ability to teach in the European Studies program / to teach Italian Studies within a comparative European framework.

Faculty members in the Professor of Teaching (PoT) series at UC Irvine are Academic Senate members who devote the majority of their effort to teaching. They also play an important role in the research/creative activity and the service mission of the University. The teaching load for Professors of Teaching in the School of Humanities is six regular courses per year. Professors of Teaching may be granted course release for major service duties beyond their regularly expected service assignments. Appointment, merit, and promotion in the Professor of Teaching series requires, in addition to excellence in teaching and service, that the candidate make outstanding and externally recognized contributions in research/creative activity in pedagogy and/or the broader discipline. As a member of the University of California Academic Senate, the successful candidate will be eligible for UCI’s faculty housing, medical, and retirement programs.

QUALIFICATIONS

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Ph.D. or equivalent in Italian or related field by the start date of appointment (7/1/2024).

Native or near-native fluency in Italian.
