Assistant Professor of Spanish for Fall 2024

Position: The Department of Languages and Linguistics at Truman State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Spanish with a focus on Hispanic Linguistics to begin August 2024. A Ph.D. in Hispanic Linguistics is required; ABD will be considered with Ph.D. completion required by August 2024.


Responsibilities: Teaching responsibilities include providing classroom instruction in lower and upper division Spanish curriculum, including courses in Spanish Phonetics and History of the Language. Scholarly activity consistent with Truman’s teacher-scholar model is expected. Additional duties include academic advising, mentoring of students in research and other experiences, and providing service to the department and University.


Applicants will be evaluated on:

· Evidence of teaching effectiveness in Spanish at the university level

· Evidence of superior performance in graduate level courses

· Native or near-native proficiency in Spanish

· Strong oral and written skills in English

· Evidence of strong interpersonal skills

· Compatibility with the department’s needs, including specialization in Hispanic Linguistics, and the ability to teach a translation course(s), and interest in teaching an Introduction to Linguistics course in English.

· Commitment to the liberal arts and sciences as a teacher-scholar

· Evidence of mentoring students in transformative experiences such as undergraduate research, service-learning, internships, study abroad and cultural activities.


Salary: Salary is commensurate with experience and education.
