Professor of English and Department Chair

The Department of English at the University of Alabama at Birmingham invites applications for a tenured position as Professor of English and Department Chair. Advanced Associate Professors near their promotion year will also be considered. We are seeking candidates with a strong scholarly and/or creative background (specialization open) and successful leadership experience in an administrative academic role.

The successful candidate will be instrumental in helping the different English programs, graduate and undergraduate, grow and thrive. The position requires (1) leading an English department with a BA in English with multiple concentrations, a BA in Writing and Media, and an MA program, and a crucial role in the university’s new core curriculum (2) supervising 30 full-time faculty both tenure-track and nontenure-track; (3) teaching and conducting research commensurate with a research-intensive university.

The successful candidate must have an excellent record of scholarship in their field and a demonstrated successful experience as an administrator. Appointment starts on August 15, 2024.
