Staff Accountant (Temporary)

The Modern Language Association (MLA) seeks an experienced accounting professional to serve as a part-time temporary staff accountant through February 2024. Under the supervision of the head of financial operations, the accountant is responsible for the financial processing and reporting of various monthly accounting transactions and reconciliations. 

Responsibilities

  • Grant reporting and accounting
  • Endowment accounting
  • Monthly close procedures, including year-end journal entries
  • Analysis and reconciliation of selected balance sheet and income statement accounts

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting with a minimum of three years’ demonstrated general accounting experience in the nonprofit or for-profit sectors
  • Experience with computerized accounting systems; experience with Netsuite SuiteSuccess preferred
  • Highly skilled in Microsoft Office, especially Word and Excel
  • Strong math and analytic skills
  • Highly organized, with the ability to communicate clearly and simply
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships within the finance department and other departments
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to handle financial information with discretion

This is a part-time, mainly remote position, with an in-person requirement for training at the MLA’s office in downtown Manhattan when needed. You must be able to work legally in the United States.
