Job Summary

The Department of English in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Texas at Arlington invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in approaches to Technology and Digital Media to start in the Fall 2024 semester.

We seek candidates who engage with the wide and significant debates on Black representation in Technology and Media in its many forms, genres, theoretical, conceptual, and practical turns. The ideal applicant should show potential for continued and sustained development in research, engagement with the scholarly community, and creative activities in their field.  Candidates should also show a record of or potential for successful teaching at the college level and a commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The successful applicant will be an active researcher who can contribute to our MA and PhD programs. The teaching load is 2/2 the first year, with the expectation of remaining 2/2 thereafter based upon significant research productivity. The position also entails service, such as mentoring graduate students and participating on committees.

Required qualifications

Ph.D. in English or a related field at time of application or official notification of completion of the doctoral degree by August 1, 2024.

Preferred qualifications

Preference will be given to applicants with research interests, qualifications, and/or experience related to one or more of the following areas:

  • Black Digital Humanities
  • Big Data & Computational Analysis (data mining, topic modeling, etc.)
  • Social Justice in big data
  • Black Feminist Digital/Visual Studies
  • New Media Studies, production, & design
  • African American material cultures & other applied technologies
  • Data storytelling
  • Afrofuturism and the Digital/Visual
  • Podcasting, sound design, audio production
  • Race and video game studies/design

Strong preference will be given to applicants with experience teaching or mentoring diverse student populations.

The Department offers an MA and PhD in English, as well as a BA in English and in English with Teacher Certification; minors in English, Creative Writing, Sound Studies, and Technical Writing & Professional Design; and a certificate in Technical Writing & Professional Design.
