Post-Doc/Visiting Scientist - Modern Languages & Classics

Job Summary: Postdoctoral Research Associate positions available to persons with degrees and research interests within Arts & Sciences, with the goal of transitioning successful candidates into tenure-track positions at the University of Alabama’s College of Arts & Sciences. 

 

Additional Department Summary: The Department of Modern Languages and Classics at The University of Alabama seeks applications for the College of Arts & Sciences Dean’s Postdoctoral Research Associate position, beginning August 15, 2024. The successful candidate will hold a doctoral degree and demonstrate a record of academic achievement in Hispanic literatures, languages, and cultures with a specialization in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion areas such as race, gender, class, environment, and/or disability studies, and must also have experience working with populations traditionally underrepresented at the university. Expertise in a specific region and/or genre is a plus. Evidence of a rigorous research agenda, a commitment to excellence, and an active interest in developing curricula that integrate literature, culture, and language in the program are required.  Native or near-native fluency in Spanish is also required. The candidate must have a Ph.D. degree in hand by August 15, 2024. The Department of Modern Languages and Classics will establish a series of structured merit-based evaluation with the goal of transitioning successful candidates into tenure-track positions. The Dean’s Postdoctoral Research Associate positions have been established through a major College initiative begun in 2019 to promote an inclusive scholarly environment in which outstanding scholars support the advancement of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the College. 

 

Required Minimum Qualifications: Applications are encouraged from excellent candidates with research interests in any of the College’s departments. Joint appointments across departments are possible. The minimum requirement at the time of the appointment is a Ph.D. or other terminal degree in a field of research represented within the College of Arts & Sciences. Initial appointments are for one year, with renewal contingent upon demonstration of research productivity. Home departments will develop mentoring plans detailing benchmarks for possible transition of Postdoctoral Research Associates into tenure-track professorship positions. Standard university hiring practices will govern any process of transitioning Postdoctoral Research Associates into tenure-track professor positions.
