Assistant Professor of Spanish (Open Specialty)
Job Description
The Department of Global Studies and Languages in the College of Arts and Letters at Idaho State University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor of Spanish (Open Specialty) with experience in and/or a desire to teach Spanish for special purposes.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will teach Spanish language and Hispanic literature and culture at the undergraduate and graduate levels. They will teach three courses per semester, which will include supporting our Spanish for Health Professions Programs (BA and Graduate Certificate) as well as our MA in Spanish. As part of our online Master’s program, they will develop fully online coursework at the graduate level in Hispanic literature and culture - with a focus on their existing area(s) of specialty. As a faculty member in the department, they will contribute to curricular development and assessment in the Spanish programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The successful candidate is expected to maintain an active research agenda as well as be actively engaged in service to the department, college, and university.
Typical courses associated with this position will include Spanish for Healthcare, Spanish Interpretation and Translation, and Topics in Language and Culture for the Professions - which can encompass courses on Spanish for Emergency Medicine, Folk Illness, and other topics depending on need and interest - as well as other courses within the program as needed. Candidates with experience in Spanish for the Health Professions or Spanish for Professional Purposes are particularly encouraged to apply.

Minimum Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Spanish (ABD with a confirmed completion date before August 2024 may be considered)
- Native or near-native fluency in Spanish and English
- Online teaching experience
- Evidence of ongoing scholarly activity
Preferred Qualifications
- Background in Latin American Studies, Second Language Acquisition, Translation/Interpretation, Spanish for the Health Professions, and/or Spanish for Professional Purposes
- Experience with heritage speakers of Spanish
- Experience in community-based engagement
- Experience teaching diverse populations including first-generation college students and returning/non-traditional students.
