Job Summary
The School of Social Science and Global Studies at The University of Southern Mississippi invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure-track, Instructor of Spanish or Assistant Teaching Professor of Spanish beginning August 2024; this is a teaching-track position with opportunities for promotion. The School is seeking candidates who will demonstrate a strong commitment to teacher training and beginning/intermediate Spanish language instruction in a cultural studies curriculum, as well as undergraduate advisement and service in support of academic initiatives. The successful candidate will teach a full range of courses commensurate with their academic credentials. The School strongly values and encourages study abroad and interdisciplinary collaboration in teaching and scholarship. We are particularly interested in candidates with a background of student teacher mentorship in K-12 education.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Teach four courses per semester, fall and spring, face-to-face and/or online as needed.
- Hold regular office hours
- Mentor and advise students in the program.
- Attend faculty meetings as determined by the Director of the School of Social Science and Global Studies and program meetings as determined by the program coordinators.
- Engage in professional development and/or scholarly activities appropriate to the mission of the School, College, and University.
- Provide service to assist the functioning of the School, College, and University.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree in Spanish, Teaching of Languages, or Second Language Acquisition (or related field), with at least 18 graduate hours of Spanish for Instructor position, OR Ph.D. in Spanish, Teaching of Languages, or Second Language Acquisition (or related field), with at least 18 graduate hours of Spanish for Assistant Teaching Professor position. Three years of K-12 language instruction experience. At least advanced-mid proficiency in Spanish. Proficiency with instructional technology.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience teaching and mentoring a diverse student body. Experience teaching in a university setting. Online teaching and LMS course design experience. Experience with graduate teaching. Study abroad experience.
