Assistant Professor of Creative Writing 

The Department of English in the College of Arts and Sciences at Howard University  invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Creative Writing, with an emphasis on creative non-fiction, with duties to commence Fall 2024.

Howard University, a culturally diverse, comprehensive, research intensive and historically Black private university, provides an educational experience of exceptional quality at the undergraduate, graduate, and professional levels to students of high academic standing and potential, with particular emphasis upon educational opportunities for Black students. Howard University is currently classified as an R2 research university with aspirations and actions underway to achieve R1 status within the next few years. It is a residential campus of approximately 12,000 students located in the heart of the nation’s capital, Washington, DC.

The Department of English currently consists of 22 tenured/tenure-track faculty members, conducting research with specializations in African American, American, Caribbean, English and comparative literatures and critical theory. It offers BA and PhD degrees in these areas.

Required Qualifications:

• MFA or Ph.D  in Creative Writing or related field
• One published book of non-fiction and a record of publication in a second area,
• Record of teaching, and professional service commensurate with the rank of assistant professor or higher; and
• An excellent record in teaching creative writing.
