Assistant Professor in Early Modern Studies or Early Modern English Drama (Shakespeare)

The Department of English in the College of Arts & Sciences at Texas A&M University invites applicants for two full-time, 9-month, tenure-track assistant professor positions in early modern studies. The Department of English has historically deep roots in early modern studies. We served as host of the World Shakespeare Bibliography for more than three decades; and since the 1990s, we continue to enjoy our membership in the Folger Institute. Based upon this strong commitment to early modern studies and digital humanities, the Modern Language Association awarded us a generous grant in 2019 to transform the New Variorum Shakespeare into dynamic, openly accessible digital editions.
The expected duties for these positions include maintaining an active publication agenda; developing and teaching undergraduate and graduate courses; undertaking appropriate academic service on departmental, college, and university committees; mentoring students from all cultural backgrounds; and engaging in professional service at the appropriate level. The normal teaching load is 2/2.

Assistant Professor, Early Modern Literary Studies:
We seek a scholar with a PhD in English or an aligned field and a clear record of teaching, research, and service to join us in shaping the next phase of early modern studies at Texas A&M. We are especially interested in attracting scholars exploring and expanding the boundaries of early modern studies through, for example, considerations of transatlantic issues or critical-textual studies. This full-time, tenure-track position will be hired at an assistant level. The anticipated start date is 1 August 2024.

Assistant Professor, Early Modern English Drama (Shakespeare):
This position invites applications from early modern scholars with a PhD in English or an aligned field, working in early modern drama studies with particular interests in Shakespeare and/or digital humanities. Texas A&M is the home of the New Variorum Shakespeare (NVS). The NVS makes Shakespeare scholarship open, accessible, and potentially groundbreaking in its creation of digital scholarly editions of his texts. This position will publicize and build a scholarly community around the NVS and its development of both open-access texts and open-source digital tools, and will work closely with the Digital Editor of the NVS. This position will also serve as the primary liaison between the Department and the NVS, including the NVS board, and report on the progress, visibility, and scholarly impact of the project. This full-time, tenure-track position will be hired at an assistant level with previous experience on the tenure-track. The anticipated start date is 1 August 2024.

Requirements:

Both positions require a PhD in English or aligned fields (Rhetoric, Comparative Literature, etc).

Assistant Professor, Early Modern Literary Studies

The ideal candidate will possess the following:
●    An active record of research, teaching, and service;
●    An interest in developing public humanities initiatives;
●    An interest in exploring the boundaries of early modern studies, broadly defined;
●    An interest in developing innovative curricula in early modern studies; and
●    A commitment to responding to the needs of first-generation students.

Assistant Professor, Early Modern English Drama (Shakespeare)

The ideal candidate will possess the following:
●    An active program of relevant research and service;
●    Familiarity with digital approaches to early modern studies;
●    Established record of leading collaborative projects;
●    Demonstrated success in advocacy and outreach for humanities efforts;
●    Demonstrated success in grant writing; and
●    Established record of participating in public humanities initiatives.
