Language Program Director in German

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at the Johns Hopkins University is seeking an experienced and innovative instructor in German to begin on July 1, 2024. This is a renewable fixed-term, non-tenure-track position in German with an initial three-year appointment.

Minimum requirement for the position is a Master’s degree, PhD or foreign equivalent preferred, in German Studies or Applied Linguistics with a German focus or closely related field. Native or near-native (C1-C2) proficiency in German and English is also required. A strong background in foreign language pedagogy or second language acquisition and experience with curriculum design, assessment, and digital technologies are essential, while familiarity with German cultural studies and literature is highly desirable.

The successful candidate will teach four courses per year within the undergraduate language curriculum and develop and support courses at all three levels of the language sequence (from beginning language courses to the third-year content-based advanced courses), in addition to the professional-track courses in Business, Science and Engineering, and Medicine and Public Health. In all courses, teaching approaches and materials should foster an inclusive environment that welcomes and supports diverse people and ideas.  

As Language Program Director, the successful candidate will train and mentor graduate-student instructors, oversee the language program, serve a diverse community of students, and work closely with the Director of Undergraduate Studies to advise undergraduate majors and minors and organize extracurricular activities to attract students to the study of German. Additionally, the German LPD serves as faculty advisor to undergraduate organizations such as the Delta Phi Alpha Chapter and the Hopkins German Club.
