The English Department at Clemson University invites applications for a distinguished Writer-in-Residence position. We seek a nationally recognized creative writer with an exceptional publishing record (e.g., significant journal publications and/or a book published with an established press). The genre is open.
The successful appointee will teach one course per semester and contribute to the intellectual life of the department. They will be expected to make regular public presentations (including readings), participate in university events, and invite writers to campus and engage them in conversation.
This is a one- to two-year position (subject to review). The salary is negotiable and based on experience and national profile.
Clemson is an R-1 land grant institution located in upstate South Carolina—a global university with a mission to serve the diverse communities of our state. The recently updated university strategic plan offers a three-tiered strategy to enhance student experience, increase faculty research, and expand the positive impact of the university within communities across South Carolina. Consequently, the search committee is especially interested to hear from candidates with an interest in student engagement and community outreach, especially to traditionally underserved communities across the state.
The Clemson English Department supports a thriving literary culture at the university and throughout upstate South Carolina. In addition to hosting visiting writers, the department publishes the South Carolina Review (SCR) and coordinates the annual Clemson Literary Festival, which draws writers and audiences from across the country.
Application Procedures: for full consideration please submit a cover letter outlining your interest in and qualifications for the position, a copy of your curriculum vitae, and a writing sample (no more than 20 pages, please) to Interfolio by December 8th, 2023. Selected applicants will be asked to provide letters of reference by the end of December.
