Faculty Employment Opportunity
POSITION: Assistant Professor of English: The Department of English invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. The person appointed to this position will teach in the areas of American literatures and cultural studies. Academic speciality may be any period, but teaching duties may span longer periods. Successful applications will demonstrate a general knowledge of American literature combined with strengths and commitments in linking local forms of cultural and literary production within histories of diasporic, ethnic, indigeneity, and/or migration studies. Other responsibilities will include academic advising of majors and service obligations to the department-including curricular development-and to the university. The department also values individuals with strengths in developing recruitment strategies, outreach for advising, and other support for student success. Effective teaching is a priority; teaching, scholarly productivity, research or creative activity, and service to the University are required for retention, promotion, and tenure. This position is contingent upon the availability of authorized funding.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A Ph. D. in Literature, English, American Studies, or a related field is required. Other minimum qualifications include evidence of effective university teaching and evidence of promise for scholarly productivity.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Strong candidates will exhibit a record of scholarship and teaching pertaining to American literature, writ large, with specializations in African-American, Asian-American, Latino/a, American Indian literature, or Literature of the Americas. As a designated Hispanic-Serving Institution, our department seeks candidates who will contribute to our commitment to diversity, social justice, and academic excellence for all of our students. Application materials should provide evidence of teaching, mentoring, or community service that supports these commitments. We especially encourage applicants who are engaged in teaching and research that addresses themes of social justice, which may include critical/theoretical models such as critical race studies, LGBTQIA+ studies, indigenous studies, or ecocriticism.

  COMPENSATION:
  
  Commensurate with qualifications and experience. Anticipated hiring range is $6,500 - $6,585 per month for Assistant Professor (12 monthly payments per academic year). As a member of the 23-campus CSU System, we offer an extremely competitive benefits package.

  The Department of English serves more than 200 majors and offers program concentrations in secondary school teaching, TESOL, and Journalism and Professional Writing. Our Journalism program is a component part of an interdisciplinary Creative Media Studies program. The Department supports undergraduate curricula in Literature, Writing, and Humanities as well as two MA programs: Literature in English, and Writing Studies.
