The Department of Language and Literature at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise seeks applicants for a tenure track Assistant Professor of French and German to teach courses at all levels of the undergraduate program. The successful candidate will teach a 4-4 load of courses in French and German, including courses that serve the College's Liberal Arts core requirement. The position also includes the potential to lead short-term study abroad programs and collaborate with our sister institutions including Pôle Léonard de Vinci University in Paris, Technical University Dortmund, and the University of Luxembourg.
Successful candidates must possess a Ph.D. in French with 18 graduate credit hours in German or a Ph.D. in German with 18 graduate credit hours in French at the time of appointment. ABDs will be considered only if the Ph.D. will be completed by the start date. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in cultural studies, French/German for the professions, or translation and interpretation. Applicants should have experience teaching French and/or German at the college level and the demonstrated ability for engaged and innovative teaching at the undergraduate level, employing pedagogies that seek to develop communicative and intercultural competence. Candidates should be able to articulate a clear understanding of UVA Wise’s public liberal arts mission and have experience and/or express specific interest in the mentoring of first-generation college students.
