Professor and Head

Head of the Department of English, Mississippi State University. We seek an accomplished scholar to lead an energetic and productive faculty in teaching and mentoring high-achieving undergraduate and graduate students. Students regularly present at local and national conferences, and recent graduates have been accepted into the nation's top graduate programs. The department offers a BA degree focused on literature, undergraduate minors in English, creative writing, film, linguistics, and TESOL, and an MA degree with emphases in literature, creative writing, linguistics, and TESOL. The department also administers MSU’s Composition Program and operates a multi-site Writing Center. Applicants should have a terminal degree in an area of emphasis within the department and significant publications warranting appointment at the rank of professor with tenure. In co-operation with the department's 36 full-time faculty members and a dedicated cohort of lecturers, the head should be able to articulate a vision for the growth and support of the major and its minors, especially as part of a STEM-focused university. In providing such leadership, the head will guide curricular revision and programmatic assessment; guide faculty through the tenure and promotion process; oversee all personnel matters; manage the budget; and serve as a liaison between faculty and administration. Documented experience in departmental or college leadership positions is required. The teaching assignment is negotiable, and the area of expertise is open. The salary will be competitive.
