The Department of Comparative Literature at Brown University invites applications for an International Humanities Postdoctoral Fellowship in Indian Ocean Studies. We seek a scholar with expertise in Indian Ocean literatures, including but not limited to the textual traditions of South Asia, Southeast Asia, or East Africa. The historical period and field of specialization are open, and we encourage applications from candidates whose work is comparative in nature. The position is a two-year term, beginning July 1, 2024.
Candidates must have completed their Ph.D. by this date, and it must have been awarded in the last five years. Recipients of a Ph.D. degree from Brown University are ineligible. They will have native or near-native fluency in English and in one or more Indian Ocean languages besides English. The Fellow will teach two classes each year in the Department of Comparative Literature; these will be cross-listed in the Cogut Institute. The Fellow will be affiliated with the Cogut Institute and participate in the weekly Tuesday fellows’ seminar and other activities.
Demonstrated excellence in scholarship and teaching is essential, as is a commitment to fostering an academic community based on the principles of diversity and inclusion. Interested candidates should address these three areas in a letter of application, submitted alongside a curriculum vitae, a dissertation abstract, an article-length sample of scholarly writing, and three letters of recommendation. All materials should be submitted via Interfolio. A salary of $65,000 is offered, plus benefits and a reimbursable research budget of $2,000 per year. Scholars from outside the United States are appointed under J-1 visas (exchange visitors status) only. Review of applications will begin on February 16, 2024 and will continue until the position is filled. The Department is especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute, through their research, teaching, and/or service, to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.
