The University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) invites applications for a tenure-track position in the Department of English at the rank of Assistant Professor, with a proposed starting date of July 1, 2024. The Department is seeking a scholar with experience in the field of Writing Studies and familiarity with literary studies. Normally, applicants for this position will have completed a PhD in Writing Studies, English Studies or a related field by the time of employment, and have a growing record of scholarly activity, as well as evidence of and commitment to teaching excellence. Experience in a leadership role such as coordinator of a Writing Centre or Writing Committee is an asset, since the successful candidate will be involved in the pedagogical development of ENGL 170: Writing and Communication Skills and other Writing Studies initiatives at UNBC.


The Department of English offers programs of study leading to a BA and MA. The department is innovative with an emphasis on literary, creative and media studies. We offer courses in literatures from around the globe as well as creative writing. Key areas include Canadian, American, British, and Indigenous literatures, Media Studies (film and television), and Creative Writing. The Department of English is committed to artistic and cultural expression not only through undergraduate courses in literary studies, creative writing and media studies, but also through graduate level offerings that are part of the Master of Arts degree in Literature, Culture and Place.

The successful applicant’s core responsibilities will be to deliver multiple sections of English 170 (Writing and Communication Skills) per year, in addition to one or two other courses. While applicants with interests in writing across the disciplines, post-secondary pedagogy, the theory and practice of writing, online learning and technology, AI, journalism, or EAL learning are particularly welcome, applications from those with a background in any area of literary studies, film studies, or creative writing will be considered if they have had experience teaching writing courses at a post-secondary institution.

It includes a satellite campus in the coastal community of Prince Rupert.

The salary for this position will be determined with consideration of the successful candidate’s relevant qualifications and experience as per the UNBC Faculty Association Collective Agreement. The annual salary range for this position is expected to be from $84,637 to $122,736. Please refer to the link below to the Collective Agreement (Article 48) for more compensation information:
