Assistant Professor (Lecturer) of Spanish in World Languages and Cultures

The Department of World Languages & Cultures at the University of Utah invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor (Lecturer) position in Spanish and Departmental Secondary Education ( DSE ) Supervisor, beginning July 1, 2024. The successful candidate will be prepared to teach Spanish language courses at all levels, supervise Spanish secondary ed practicum, and oversee the Department’s participation in the Bridge program.

This position serves as liaison between the Department and Bridge-serving high schools in the Salt Lake area, the University’s Second Language Teaching & Resource Center (L2TreC), which administers the Bridge program statewide, and university offices—including Continuing Education, the registrar, and concurrent enrollment. These duties include attending relevant meetings, managing university Bridge instructors’ schedules, observing their teaching, and trouble-shooting grading issues.

The teaching load is 6 courses per year (3/3), with a one course release or stipend for DSE supervisor duties. The successful candidate must have demonstrated experience in teaching first through third-year Spanish at the university level in North America and have work experience with Utah’s DLI /Bridge Program or a similar concurrent enrollment program. Prior experience with heritage language teaching is highly desirable. Native or near-native fluency in Spanish and English are required. Preference will be given to candidates with a Ph.D. in hand in Spanish, Secondary Education/Pedagogy, or a related field by the start date.
