Director of Composition; Associate Professor of Rhetoric and Composition

The Department of English and Philosophy at Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) invites applications for a tenured, full-time associate professor to serve as the Director of Composition. Qualified candidates will have a Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition or closely related field and are expected to have previous experience in a leadership role in writing program administration. Candidates should have scholarly expertise in writing studies (broadly construed) as well as significant experience teaching both first-year and advanced writing courses. Candidates will have opportunities to contribute to areas of future growth in the department through work in digital rhetorics and new media, digital humanities, and professional and technical writing. The Director of Composition role is a full-time, 12-month appointment with a course load of four courses per academic year.

The Director of Composition serves as the senior writing program administrator in the Department of English and Philosophy at Auburn University at Montgomery. They work with the Chair of the Department of English and Philosophy and the Associate Director of Composition to create, maintain, and enhance the quality of first-year writing programs at the university.

The primary responsibilities of the Director of Composition include:

  • regularly teaching courses within the first-year writing sequence;
  • overseeing curriculum implementation and development within the composition program;
  • assisting with ongoing assessment of first-year writing courses and the composition program;
  • organizing professional development for the composition program and mentoring faculty, especially graduate teaching assistants (GTAs), adjunct instructors, and lecturers;
  • consulting with the Chair of the Department concerning scheduling and staffing assignments; and
  • working with the Chair of the Department to promote the composition program at the university.
