Assistant Professor - English

The Department of English at Lehman College invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor position in Composition beginning Fall 2024 to serve as Director of Composition. The Director of Composition position oversees a large first-year writing program within the university’s General Education Program. The successful applicant will be responsible for supporting part-time and full-time composition instructors, providing professional development, collaborating with academic departments and literacy initiatives across campus, and representing and advocating for the program within the college and the university at large. The successful candidate will have experience and scholarly interest in writing program administration, including curriculum development and assessment. In addition to the responsibilities of the Director of Composition, the successful candidate will be expected to teach one undergraduate or graduate course per academic year.

The Director of Composition will be a full-time member of the English department. The Lehman College English Department is a vibrant department of readers, writers, scholars, critics, editors, digital humanists, and engaged community members. As part of a Hispanic Serving Institution situated among the rich cultural, racial, and linguistic diversity of The Bronx and surrounding areas, the English department engages with literatures and cultural material past and present, local and global. Through innovative teaching and inventive scholarship, we practice critical analysis, creative expression, and skills for understanding and contributing to a wide range of communities. Each of our three tracks for the major -- Literature, Creative Writing, and Professional Writing -- prepares students with the skills and knowledge necessary for the many professions available to English majors.

The Department of English is housed in the School of Arts and Humanities at Lehman College. QUALIFICATIONS

PhD in English, Composition, or other related discipline, as well as ability in the following areas:

  • Teaching students of diverse racial, ethnic, linguistic, and educational backgrounds
  • Active, student-centered pedagogy
  • Student mentoring experience
  • Use of technology to support teaching and learning

COMPENSATION

Salary ranges from $82,928 to $90,375 and is commensurate with education and experience.
