Position Summary: Trinity College’s Department of Language and Culture Studies invites applications for two full-time Visiting Assistant Professors of Language and Culture Studies (French/Francophone Studies), each of which is for a two-year term, beginning July 2024. The Department of Language and Culture Studies offers courses in ten different languages and is committed to innovation in pedagogy across all levels of our curriculum. Note that the Department’s Francophone Studies section (formerly French) uses the term “Francophone” as an umbrella term for all French-speaking cultures, including France.

We are seeking candidates with a record of excellence in language instruction who are passionate about teaching elementary and intermediate French courses, as well as upper-level content courses in their field of specialty. Candidates must demonstrate evidence of an active research agenda as well as a strong commitment to teaching diverse undergraduate students in an interdisciplinary, liberal arts context. We are especially interested in candidates who bring a translingual and/or comparative approach to Francophone Studies and whose research and teaching could complement our new curricular sequence: Race and Empire, Revolts and Revolution, Language and Identity, and Creative Writing. Candidates in any specialization and working on any period may apply, though one position will be reserved for a specialist in the francophone world beyond hexagonal France (a focus on West Africa, North Africa, the Caribbean, the Pacific, and/or Vietnam would be especially welcome). Other specializations of interest include (but are not limited to) periods prior to the 19th century, second language acquisition, film studies, translation studies, and theater and performance studies. The teaching load is five courses per year.

Qualifications: This position is a two-year appointment. Applicants must have native or near-native fluency in French and English. A PhD in French or Francophone Studies (or related field) is required by July 1, 2024, though strong candidates with ABD status will also be considered.
