Instructor, Spanish

The School of International Letters and Cultures (SILC) at ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY seeks applications for the position of Instructor in the area of Spanish Literature and Culture. The successful candidate will be expected to teach lower and/or upper division Spanish language courses at all levels (elementary through advanced level) as well as courses related to Latin American and Peninsular Literature and Culture when needed. Candidates will also work closely with program coordinators to prepare syllabi, lectures, class materials, and class assignments. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible appointment made on an academic year basis (Aug.16 – May 15). A typical full-time course load is four to five classes per academic semester. Subsequent annual renewal is possible contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of resources, the needs of the university, and sufficient enrollment in assigned courses. Anticipated start date is August 16, 2024.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MA in Spanish Literature, language pedagogy, applied linguistics, linguistics, or related field, by time of appointment.
  • Three years’ experience in higher education teaching Spanish language courses (elementary through advanced level).
  • Evidence of effective teaching in online and face-to-face modalities.
  • Native/near-native proficiency in both Spanish and English.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with faculty, staff, students and communities to advance the principles of the ASU Charter.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Spanish literature, Spanish linguistics or a related field by the time of appointment.
  • Experience with ACTFL proficiency standards and proficiency-based approaches to teaching Spanish as a second language.
  • Demonstrated expertise in teaching advanced literature and cultural courses in Spanish.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in appropriate technologies in language instruction.
  • Demonstrated success meeting the needs of diverse student populations and/or reaching out to diverse communities.
