The Social Sciences Collegiate Division and the Division of the Social Sciences at the University of Chicago are now accepting applications for full-time Senior Instructional Professors. They will serve, in the near-term, as Co-Directors of the Social Sciences Writing Program, with future directorial involvement in other programs in the Chicago Writing Center as they are developed. The SIPs will also teach in the Social Sciences general education program (the Core) and other undergraduate courses.
The Social Sciences Core and Civilization Studies sequences are part of the general education requirements for undergraduates and serve as a keystone in the University of Chicago’s rich educational tradition. More information about the UChicago general education program, the Core, can be viewed here: https://college.uchicago.edu/academics/core-curriculum. More information about the Social Sciences Core can be viewed in the College’s online catalog: http://collegecatalog.uchicago.edu/thecollege/socialsciences/.
The College Writing Program generally aims to teach students to write well in order to advance their own analytical thinking. The program is tailored to the needs of undergraduate programs and relies on staff who are trained to work with students on their writing, with an emphasis on strengthening arguments.
The appointment is renewable, with an initial term of at least three years, beginning July 1, 2024. Appointment at the rank of Assistant, Associate, and full Senior Instructional Professor will be considered based on the candidate’s experience.
The Senior Instructional Professor will teach at least four quarter-length courses each academic year in the general education program to which they are best suited. In addition to teaching, the Senior Instructional Professors will contribute to ongoing curriculum development. The successful candidate will participate actively in weekly staff meetings, attend other course-related events, and hold regular office hours.
In addition to the teaching load, the Senior Instructional Professors will work in the administration of Writing Center programs including the SOSC Writing Program, a duty which includes jointly hiring, training, and supervising a writing staff of up to 30; overseeing and contributing to the production of the program’s teaching and learning resources; overseeing workshops for students and instructors; and engaging faculty instructors and Core Chairs in the program’s development and integration into Core pedagogy.
