Instructor in French and the Core Curriculum

Position Overview

The Department of Modern Languages, Literatures & Cultures at Butler University invites applications for a full-time instructor (2-year position) in French and the Core Curriculum.

Applicants should be prepared to teach French courses at all levels and courses in the Global and Historical Studies area of the core curriculum (See https://www.butler.edu/academics/core/components/global-historical-studies/). We are particularly interested in candidates whose teaching and scholarship focus on North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, the Americas, and/or Europe.

Ideal candidates will have native or near-native fluency in French and in English. They will demonstrate dedication to teaching, have a history of implementing engaged-learning and inclusive pedagogies, and demonstrate a commitment to supporting students from historically underrepresented and marginalized religious, racial-ethnic, national, and class groups. They will show interest in contributing to building an inclusive learning environment for an increasingly diverse student population. Inclusive and evidence-based pedagogy is expected at Butler University.  

The successful candidate will teach two undergraduate French courses and two Global and Historical Studies course sections each semester. Global and Historical Studies seeks to help students recognize the role of human interactions in shaping diverse identities and inequalities; to develop knowledge about historical moments, peoples, and places; and to better understand the relationship between the past and the present. This is a teaching-oriented position with no research expectations and a 4/4 load.

This faculty member could choose to affiliate with the International Studies; Peace and Conflict Studies; Race, Gender, and Sexuality Studies; African Studies, and/or Science, Technology, and Environmental Studies interdisciplinary programs.

Applicants should have earned a master’s degree (doctorate preferred) in French, Francophone Studies, Comparative Literature or African Studies before August 1, 2024.

Review of applications will begin March 18th, but the position will remain open until filled. 

Shortlisted candidates may be asked to provide additional materials such as sample syllabi, descriptions of course activities or assignments, evaluations of teaching. Final round candidates will need to provide official transcripts and will be asked to consent to background checks. The successful candidate will start August 2024, subject to final budgetary approval.
