The Department of French and Italian at the University of Pittsburgh (www.frit.pitt.edu) invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor of French with a specialization in Medieval or Renaissance Studies and one (or more) of our department’s four curricular and research networks: environment; film & media; gender & sexuality; nation/transnation (https://www.frenchanditalian.pitt.edu/research/research-networks). We especially welcome applications from candidates who engage with gender and sexuality studies in and beyond contexts of Medieval or Renaissance Studies, including candidates able to teach undergraduate courses in French and Francophone thought on gender and sexuality. The teaching load is four courses per year at the undergraduate and graduate level. Pending budgetary approval, the position will begin in fall 2024 and is outside the tenure-track, with a one-year contract. 

Applicants must have an active research profile, demonstrated interest and proven proficiency in teaching, native or near-native fluency in French and English, the ability to mentor undergraduate and graduate students in curricular and experiential contexts, and PhD in hand at the time of appointment. PhD may be in any field.  

The Department of French and Italian at the University of Pittsburgh is a vibrant community of students and scholars hosting a French major and minor, a PhD in French, and a PhD in Film and Media Studies with a Concentration in French offered in conjunction with the Film and Media Studies Program. Italian and French faculty collaborate on research, curriculum, and programming initiatives across the two programs.
