Assistant Professor English, Film Studies and U.S. Literature

The Department of English at the University of Nevada, Reno invites applications for an assistant professor in film studies and U.S. Literature with a secondary area in queer theory to begin January 1, 2025. The candidate should have an active research agenda and teaching experience in film studies and U.S. literature that are informed by queer theory. Applicants possessing or expecting PhDs in English, Cinema and Media Studies, or related fields no later than January 1 2025 are invited to apply. We are especially eager to interview candidates who wish to be actively engaged in the curricular development of our growing minor in Cinema and Media Studies. The faculty member who joins the department can expect to contribute to the department’s undergraduate and graduate programs and will have opportunities to participate in the university’s Core Humanities Program and interdisciplinary race and ethnic, gender and sexuality, Indigenous, and global studies programs as appropriate.  

The teaching load will include both undergraduate and graduate courses. Faculty who teach and mentor graduate students and engage in scholarly research typically have a 2/2 load.
 

Required Qualifications

An active and promising research agenda is expected, as are experience and promise as an excellent teacher. The PhD must be completed no later than January 1 2025. Successful candidates must be able to teach courses and pursue a research agenda in both film studies and queer theory.

Preferred Qualifications

A track record of campus programming or community engagement is preferred, including experience developing curriculum.

Evidence of attention to diversity, equity, and inclusion in research, teaching, and/or service.

Department Information

The Department of English, housed in the College of Liberal Arts, offers a diverse range of fields of study including literature, language and linguistics, professional and public writing, and creative writing. We also offer a minor in cinema and media studies. Our graduate programs include PhD concentrations in literature and Rhetoric & Writing Studies, an MFA in creative writing, and MA degrees in literature, RWS, and Public Engagement. The department houses the Core Writing program for the university and maintains close relationships with other core and affiliate programs including Core Humanities and the Department of Gender, Race, and Identity Studies.
