Assistant Professor in Residence


The Department of English at the University of Connecticut invites applications for one position teaching first-year writing at the rank of Assistant Professor in Residence, renewable annually based on funding and performance. This position will begin on August 23, 2024, and will be located at the UConn Storrs campus.

The ideal candidate will bring significant teaching experience in FYW for a variety of students at all levels of experience. The ideal candidate will also demonstrate an engaged understanding of recent composition theories and practices, pedagogies, and approaches at the post-secondary level.

Desirable areas of specialization include cultural rhetorics and literacies, multimodal composition, disability studies, gender and sexuality studies, and writing-program administration. Preference will be given to a candidate whose career revolves around the teaching of first-year writing at the post-secondary level. 

The successful candidate will teach first-year writing courses on the Storrs campus using a recently revised curriculum that is built on an inquiry-based approach to reading, writing, and composition. In our courses, students move through the intellectual tasks of composing to develop contextually sensitive multimodal projects in response to shared and discovered texts.   • Completion of all requirements for the Ph.D. in Rhetoric/Composition, English, or a closely related field with degree awarded by the start date of employment. 
  • Evidence of graduate coursework in rhetoric and composition, linguistics, and/or multilingual writing.
  • Evidence of a strong commitment to undergraduate education in writing studies, rhetoric, and composition, as well as experience teaching students with a variety of needs and experiences. 
  • Experience teaching multimodal composition and integrating various educational technologies. 
  • Evidence of deep commitment to supporting diversity, inclusion, equity, and accessibility in higher education.


  • Experience creating and participating in faculty development for a writing program. 
  • Experience with the practices and scholarship writing program administration.
  • Experience teaching college composition with multilingual students.


This is a full-time, nine-month, non-tenure-track teaching position that carries a 7-course per year teaching load with an expectation for fulfilling professional development offered through First-Year Writing. FYW instructors report directly to the First-Year Writing Director and the Department Head of English. The position is located in Storrs. The successful candidate hired for this position may be renewed annually dependent on funding and performance; after six successful years, Assistant Professors in Residence may be eligible for a multi-year contract.
