The University Honors Program and the Writing and Reasoning Program at SMU seek two full-time lecturers to teach Honors composition, critical reasoning, and other Honors courses as needed. The positions are non-tenure track but renewable in three-year contracts. The initial appointment is for one year.
The University Honors Program (UHP) prepares undergraduate students for their future by emphasizing a broad-based education in the humanities and sciences, and fosters a culture of intellectual curiosity. The courses taught are designed to help students develop strong writing and critical reasoning skills. There are two sequential courses (WRTR 2305, fall and WRTR 2306, spring) taken during the first year at SMU, as well as the second year humanities seminar (UHP 3300), and a limited number of general education courses. Each lecturer will be asked to teach Honors WRTR courses primarily, with the occasional assignment to teach one of the other Honors courses.
The normal teaching load is 4/4, with the successful candidate participating in the following responsibilities of the Honors Program:
*Collaborate with other colleagues as a team or unit in arriving at a consensus for the semester’s readings and assignments
*Follow the common syllabus for WRTR 2305 and 2306 (or other UHP courses)
*Work toward the agreed upon common assignments that fulfill curricular requirements
*Attend the Honors WRTR faculty meetings—weekly or biweekly, as determined by the faculty director
*Share syllabi and assignments (paper assignments, discussion prompts, etc.,) on the Canvas Honors Faculty Course
*Be available for (and encourage) student meetings outside of class—which includes posted office hours
*Return to students graded coursework in a timely manner
*Hold in person conferences with each student for at least two of the major essay assignments
*Participate in the pre-semester Honors & Scholars’ Common Reading Program
*Attend at least two Honors events per semester (including the semester’s movie night)
Minimum Qualifications: Masters Degree Required, Ph.D. preferred; experience teaching undergraduate courses in writing, in any field of the arts and sciences. Position will begin in the Fall 2024 semester in August.
Application: Applications must be submitted via interfolio (https://apply.interfolio.com/146935) and should include a letter highlighting the candidate’s qualifications and interest in the position, a complete curriculum vitae, and three letters of recommendation. Review of applications will begin 10 June. To ensure full consideration for the position, the application must be received by Monday 10 June, but the committee will continue to accept applications until the position is filled. The committee will notify applicants of the employment decision after the position is filled. Hiring is contingent upon the satisfactory completion of a background check.
