Position description
The Department of English at the University of California, Berkeley is hiring a tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in Latinx and/or Chicanx literatures. The successful candidate will have training in Latinx and/or Chicanx cultural studies; grounding in one or more Latinx regional, national, and/or transnational literatures/cultures; and a dynamic critical approach to the traditions(s) in which they specialize. We welcome a wide variety of theoretical, historical, and critical approaches to the field.
Tenure-track Assistant Professors at Berkeley are expected to excel in research, teaching, and service. Elements of the position include the following: implementing a program of research that culminates in the publication of books and articles; developing and teaching undergraduate and graduate seminars and lecture courses; mentoring undergraduate and graduate students; supervising dissertation research; and participating in various administrative activities in the English department and across the University.
We are committed to advancing the University's diversity, equity, and inclusion goals at all levels, from faculty hiring to graduate admissions to undergraduate teaching. English department faculty participate in models of graduate and undergraduate mentorship developed to foster collaboration and community within the department. Candidates should address how their research, teaching, and service contribute to these departmental and campus goals in their cover letters, specifying their understanding of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging; their record of activities to date; and their plans for advancing those values if hired at Berkeley.
Berkeley English fosters an exceptional research environment and has developed a dynamic curriculum in our excellent graduate and undergraduate programs. The department is dedicated to the global and historical study of literatures written in English, as well as nurturing collaborations across disciplinary divides. The successful candidate will have opportunities to build relationships and participate in programming with colleagues from across campus at the Latinx Research Center and other venues.
The department is committed to addressing the family needs of faculty, including dual career couples and single parents. We are also interested in candidates who have had non-traditional career paths or who have taken time off for family reasons, or who have achieved excellence in careers outside academia. For information about potential relocation to Berkeley, or career needs of accompanying partners and spouses, please visit: http://ofew.berkeley.edu/new-faculty.
The University of California is committed to creating and maintaining a community dedicated to the advancement, application, and transmission of knowledge and creative endeavors through academic excellence, where all individuals who participate in University programs and activities can work and learn together in a safe and secure environment, free of violence, harassment, discrimination, exploitation, or intimidation. Consistent with this commitment, UC Berkeley requires all applicants for Senate faculty positions to complete, sign, and upload an Authorization of Information Release form into AP Recruit as part of their application. If an applicant does not include the signed authorization, the application will be considered incomplete, and as with any incomplete application, will not receive further consideration. Although all applicants for faculty recruitments must complete the entire application, applicants will only be subject to reference checks if and when they are selected as the candidate to whom the hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer.
