Assistant Professor of German Studies

The Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, invites applicants for a full-time, tenure-track position in German Studies to begin August 25, 2025. 

  • This is a university year appointment and will be at the level of Assistant Professor. 
  • We are looking for a scholar with a focus on German Literature, Culture, and the Arts pre-1900. 
  • We are particularly interested in scholars who combine expertise in visual studies, literary studies, performance studies or music with a methodological approach focusing on questions of race and/or gender and sexuality.

Responsibilities:

  • The successful candidate will teach a range of courses in German and English, from introductory undergraduate lecture courses through graduate seminars;
  • Supervise doctoral dissertations;
  • Participate actively in the department and support the department through committee work
  • Research

Required Qualifications:

  • Near native fluency in German and English;
  • Familiarity with U.S. system of higher education;
  • Ph.D. in German Studies or related fields in hand by July 1, 2025.
