Creative Writing - Fiction

Position: Creative Writing tenure-track faculty position to start August 1, 2025. Apply here by September 1, 2024.

Required Degree: MFA or MA in Creative Writing or similar field required, with distinguished publication record. PhD preferred. Required degree must be completed by the start date. 

Experience:   

  • Current record of fiction publications
  • Collegiate-level literature and composition instruction (preferred)

Duties/Expectations

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses specific to the Creative Writing track and minor, with a focus on fiction.
  • Teach students to analyze models from traditional and contemporary literature and develop skills as fiction writers.
  • Regularly publish fiction in appropriate peer-reviewed venues and presses. Publications may include writing in other genres or other forms of scholarship, including pedagogy.
  • Commit to innovative teaching focused on student growth and lifelong learning.
  • Support student faith through obvious commitment to the religious expectations of the sponsoring institution, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
  • Advise students on both formal and informal areas (academic, career, etc.).
  • Mentor undergraduate and graduate research and publications.
  • Maintain an active research program, including academic presentations and scholarly publications in appropriate national and international peer-reviewed venues.
  • Serve on department, college, and university committees, as well as in professional organizations.
  • Participate in faculty meetings and other academic discussions and fulfill citizenship assignments as requested by the department, college, and/or university.
  • Support the mission of the English Department and Brigham Young University.
  • If hired, must reside in the state of Utah.
  • Teach a ten-month annual contract, with a teaching load* of 2 courses fall semester, 2 courses winter semester, and 1 course spring or summer term.

*This position may be filled with a visiting instructor while the search for a tenure-track candidate continues. An MA or MFA is the minimum degree required for a visiting instructor. In lieu of scholarship and citizenship expectations, a visiting instructor has an increased teaching load: 4 courses fall, 4 courses winter, and 1 course spring or summer. Candidates with a substantial publication record will have a teaching load of three courses fall, 3 courses winter, and 1 course spring or summer.
