Wesleyan University’s Department of Romance Languages and Literatures invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of French beginning July 1, 2025. Ph.D. in French or related field in hand by the time of appointment to be hired as an Assistant Professor; a successful candidate may be hired as an Instructor if the candidate does not have a Ph.D. in hand at the time of appointment, but will complete the Ph.D. in French or related field within one year of hire. We seek a colleague with a specialization and research interests in twentieth and twenty-first-century France, with a demonstrated ability and interest in teaching women’s literature in France, c. 1880-present. We are also very eager to consider candidates who might have a sub-specialty or interest in another area. Possibilities include art or art history, creative writing, cultural politics, environmental humanities, literature and science, or philosophy. Whatever the profile, however, the ability to contribute broadly to an interdisciplinary French Studies curriculum ranging from the Middle Ages to the present is essential. The successful candidate will have native fluency in French and provide tangible evidence of scholarly promise and excellence in language instruction. Candidates should be able and eager to teach at all levels of the curriculum, from elementary language courses to advanced seminars. The candidate should also be ready to collaborate with members of the French section to review, evaluate, and update our French language sequence as needed. Wesleyan’s teaching load is two courses per semester (in person) on Wesleyan’s campus. Additional duties include advising and mentoring students, carrying on a program of research, and participating in faculty governance at the departmental and university level. Faculty also serve, occasionally, as Resident Director of the Vassar-Wesleyan Program in Paris. A complete application includes a cover letter, curriculum vitae, writing sample (max. 25 pages), statement of current research, and documentation of teaching experience, including teaching statement, course syllabi and student evaluations. In the cover letter, applicants should describe how they will also support the university’s commitment to fostering an inclusive community, as well as their experience working with individuals from historically marginalized or underserved groups. You will also be asked to provide the email addresses of three referees from whom we will obtain confidential letters of recommendation.
