We are hiring two tenure-track Assistant Professors in Creative Writing (Fiction) and World Literature.
Here's some information on the job listings and how to apply.
Assistant Professor of Creative Writing (Fiction)
The Department of English at Appalachian State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Creative Writing, specifically in fiction with a secondary interest in creative nonfiction, comics and graphic novels, or digital literature, to start August, 2025.
We seek a faculty member committed to excellence in undergraduate teaching (particularly in classes in creative prose), support for students of all backgrounds, ongoing creative writing publication, and academic service. The successful candidate will maintain an active publication agenda, teach a 3/3 load, and join an established creative writing program that features an undergraduate concentration offering courses in poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, playwriting, screenwriting, and special topics. More broadly, the department has a vibrant creative writing culture for students and faculty. This includes a Visiting Writers Series, which hosts campus events by multiple authors every semester, as well as the Rachel Rivers-Coffey Distinguished Visiting Professor each fall. We also have two professional journals, Cold Mountain Review and Appalachian Journal, as well as the student literary journal The Peel.

Assistant Professor of World Literature
The Department of English at Appalachian State University invites applications for a tenure-track position in World Literature at the rank of Assistant Professor, pending final administrative and budgetary approval. The position will start on August 1, 2025. A PhD in Comparative Literature, English, or closely related field, and evidence of successful teaching are required. Early-career scholars are welcome to apply, but candidates must have defended their dissertations by the start date.
We are especially interested in scholars who focus on the ancient world and/or reception studies, or have expertise in teaching ancient texts (particularly world mythologies). Secondary areas of interest include but are not limited to Ecocritical Studies, Animal Studies, digital humanities, and Folklore. The successful candidate will have experience teaching World Literature courses, be familiar with issues of translation and circulation, and possess second language proficiency. We seek a faculty member committed to excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching, with the ability to teach introductory as well as major-specific and graduate courses. Candidates must have pedagogies that support students of all backgrounds.
