Assistant Professor - Queer and Medieval Literature

Job Description:

The Department of English at the State University of New York at Oneonta invites applications for a tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor of Queer and Medieval Literature beginning Fall 2025. Expectations include, but are not limited to, teaching, research, student advisement, college service, and continuing professional development. Review of applications will begin on November 1, 2024. The Department of English currently has ten tenured or tenure-track professors as well as adjuncts and lecturers teaching a diverse array of courses in literature, composition, creative and professional writing, linguistics, and critical theory. We offer both a literature track and a writing track that incorporates professional and creative writing.  Our faculty are encouraged to design courses in their areas of specialty and have the opportunity to teach cross-listed courses with Women's and Gender Studies, Africana and Latinx Studies, World Languages and Literatures, Philosophy, and other departments.  About half of our students are dual-Adolescent Education majors.  We offer minors in English, classics, creative writing, and professional writing.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Teaching courses in:
    • Queer literature, medieval literature, surveys of world and/or British literature, composition, introductory and core literature classes.
    • Cross-listed courses with the Department of Women's and Gender Studies.
    • Other courses in the candidate's area of specialty and other courses to meet department needs.
  • Maintaining an active scholarly agenda
  • Service to the department, school, campus, the greater community, and the profession
  • Appreciation of campus values: Sustainability, Service, Equity and Inclusion, through teaching and interactions with students

Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in English, Comparative Literature, or related field.  ABD considered; official confirmation of degree conferral by issuing institution by start of employment
  • Proficiency in gender and sexuality studies with expertise in queer literature, expertise in medieval literature, and familiarity with recent work in premodern queer, gender, and sexuality studies.
  • Ability to teach composition, introductory, survey, and general literature courses.

  • Depth of experience working with diverse populations and/or pedagogy that addresses cultural diversity
  • Ability to work collaboratively within the department and across disciplines.
  • Experience with experiential or applied learning.
