The Department of Linguistics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor position in phonology and phonetics, with expertise in areas such as, but not limited to, bilingual phonology, second language acquisition of phonology and phonetics, sociophonetics, and computational phonology, alongside a commitment to teaching theoretical phonology. Position Overview:Successful candidates are expected to teach effectively at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, establish and maintain an active and independent research program in Phonology/Phonetics, and provide service to the department, the university and the profession. The budgeted salary range for the position is $80,000 to $83,000, for a 9-month service basis. The anticipated start date is August 16, 2025.
Qualifications:A Ph.D. in Linguistics or a related field before the start date of the position, with specialization in phonology/phonetics. Preference will be given to candidates with PhD in hand by August 15, 2025. Candidates whose PhD may be delayed but who will complete all the Ph.D. requirements within the first appointment year may be appointed at the rank of Instructor. After the Ph.D. requirement is met, the appointment will be changed to Assistant Professor.A record of research effectiveness or potential for research effectiveness.A commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentorship, including a commitment to teaching theoretical phonology.
