The Linguistics Program in the Department of English at Baylor University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant to Associate Professor position in Linguistics to begin in the fall of 2025. This is a full-time, tenure-track position open to all applicants at the assistant, advanced assistant, or associate level, with the possibility of tenure for highly qualified applicants.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a research and teaching agenda appropriate for an R-1 institution. Preference will be given to candidates who meet one or more of the following criteria: a record of published scholarship, teaching experience, and the potential to seek external research funding. 

We welcome applications from candidates specializing in linguistics, especially candidates whose research and teaching specializations complement those of the current faculty. Possible areas of specialty that could benefit our program include but are not limited to phonetics and phonology, language change, language contact, language and race, language preservation, bilingualism (especially with a focus on phonology), or field linguistics.

About the English Department and the Linguistics Program

The English Department at Baylor University is organized into three programs: Linguistics, Professional Writing and Rhetoric, and Literature and Creative Writing. Each program offers an undergraduate major and a secondary major. The department also offers an MA and PhD in English Literature. The Linguistics Program is a well-established undergraduate program offering a rigorous curriculum covering a wide range of linguistics to students with diverse language interests. Qualifications

  • PhD in Linguistics or related field in hand by August 1, 2025
  • Evidence of a productive research agenda in some area of linguistics 
  • Experience teaching upper-level linguistics courses (esp., Phonetics and Phonology) is preferred

 

Essential Functions

Teaching will involve offering primarily upper-level undergraduate linguistics courses in the Linguistics major. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to teach an upper-level Phonetics and Phonology course for majors, in addition to offering other upper-level linguistics courses in areas of interest. Candidates should demonstrate a well-defined and productive research agenda, teaching excellence, and a willingness to serve the program, department, university, and profession. In particular, we seek candidates excited about pursuing program growth and interdisciplinary connections (e.g., collaborative research, cross-listed courses with other academic units, community research, and service projects).
