The department of Hispanic Studies at Brown University invites applications for a full-time Lecturer, specializing in Spanish language teaching, with an initial three-year contract beginning July 1, 2025. Lecturer positions at Brown are regular, renewable positions with a possibility of promotion to Senior Lecturer and eventually Distinguished Senior Lecturer. The position includes a 2-2 teaching load (4 credit-hour courses, predominantly in the standard language sequence, with potential opportunities for self-designed courses), as well as the coordination of multi-section language courses.

In addition to teaching and coordination, lecturers collaborate with colleagues in the administration of the language program, curricular development, and the training and supervision of graduate student teaching assistants. Other responsibilities include service to the university such as student advising, ongoing professional development and contributions to the academic and teaching community. These efforts are supported by conference travel and research funds as well as scholarly leaves (upon approval).

We seek a candidate with demonstrated excellence in teaching Spanish at various levels. Experience in course coordination, design of instructional materials and curricula, and scholarly work directly related to language teaching is highly desirable. Experience in and commitment to heritage learner teaching, community-engaged learning, and/or Spanish in the professions would be an asset. The successful candidate will be committed to fostering a climate of inclusion for students of diverse backgrounds and identities.

Requirements: Spanish and English proficiency at the highest level and relevant, sustained experience in teaching Spanish at the university level are essential. A minimum of a Master’s Degree (or equivalent) required. Specialization in Applied Linguistics, Language Teaching, or Second Language Acquisition preferred, although consideration will be given to candidates in related areas with substantial teaching experience who show evidence of significant professional development in this field. The department strongly encourages applications from qualified candidates who can contribute to equity, diversity and inclusion through their teaching, mentoring, service, and research.

Please submit: a letter of application, curriculum vitae, three letters of recommendation (at least one directly addressing teaching abilities), and a teaching portfolio that demonstrates your pedagogical approach. It should include: 1) an annotated sample of original teaching materials, consisting of a detailed outline and description of a complete learning sequence integrating language objectives and thematic content (not to exceed 20 pages); 2) a short narrative (maximum 2 pages) describing how these materials are informed by your teaching philosophy and experience; 3) a link to an unedited teaching video of a full length Spanish language class or other relevant pedagogical demonstration, if available (we might request this of long-listed candidates if not submitted at this time).

Initial interviews for the position will be made by Zoom. For full consideration, applications should be submitted by October 15, 2024. Submit applications online at  http://apply.interfolio.com/152826.
