The Program in Comparative Literature at Oberlin College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in the College of Arts and Sciences whose expertise encompasses Comparative Literature, Literary Translation, and one Western and at least one non-Western or non-European tradition. The candidate’s work will also engage other disciplines (such as art history, cinema and media studies, audio-visual translation, museum studies, music, medicine). The incumbent’s areas of expertise will complement the teaching and research interests of current faculty in Comparative Literature. Initial appointment to this position will be for a term of four years beginning in Fall 2025 and will carry the rank of Assistant Professor.
The incumbent will teach a total of 4.5 courses in the general area of comparative literature and world literature, with an emphasis on cultural and literary theory, as well as translation/ translation theory. The incumbent will teach introductory as well as advanced courses on comparative and interdisciplinary topics and help cover the entire curriculum in Comparative Literature. The incumbent will also engage in sustained scholarly research and/or other creative work appropriate to the position and participate in the full range of faculty responsibilities, including academic advising, supervising, and mentoring, event programming and coordination, as well as service on committees.
Among the qualifications required for appointment is the Ph.D degree in Comparative Literature (in hand or expected by the first semester of academic year 2025). Successful teaching experience at the college level is desirable, as are ability and interest to teach in another language. The incumbent’s areas of specialization will complement the expertise of current faculty in Comparative Literature.
