The Department of Spanish and Portuguese in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Iowa seeks to hire a linguist focused on Spanish sociolinguistics. The ideal candidate will have primary expertise in sociolinguistics, focused on the Spanish-speaking world, Spanish-speaking communities within other non-Spanish dominant contexts, and/or Spanish in contact, and will have a strong record of research and teaching to complement and/or expand existing areas of focus in the department. The appointment will be a tenure-track position at the level of Assistant Professor, effective August 20, 2025.
We particularly encourage candidates with a collaborative approach who envision themselves working with theoreticians and experimentalists in a variety of fields, and who can situate their study of sociolinguistics across diverse contexts. There are many opportunities to contribute to programs committed to cross-disciplinary inquiry, develop ties to language scientists across the university, and establish contacts with the broader Iowa community through outreach and engagement activities. Candidates from outside the United States are also encouraged to apply. Please contact the Chair of the search committee regarding eligibility.
To apply, please visit jobs.uiowa.edu and reference Requisition #75289. The application materials must include a letter of application, a curriculum vitae, a maximum of three sample publications, and three letters of recommendation. Screening begins November 1, 2024, and will continue until the position is filled. Preliminary Zoom interviews will be conducted in December.
Successful candidates will be required to self-disclose any misconduct history or pending research misconduct investigation including but not limited to sexual misconduct in prior employment and provide a related release and will be subject to a criminal background and credential check and credential/education verification.
