English Tenure-Track Generalist

Mississippi College, a private comprehensive Christian university, invites individuals to apply to join the Department of English and Philosophy in a full-time, tenure track generalist position. The department’s curriculum offers courses in textual analysis, qualitative research, English secondary education and philosophy.

Individuals should have a terminal degree in English or will have one completed by Fall 2025. They should also be enthusiastic about teaching systematic qualitative analysis of texts primarily to undergraduates. Courses emphasize an exploration and production of a variety of texts in various modes with careful attention to replicable methodologies. The department also supports several minors: English studies for non-majors, applied humanities, African American studies and philosophy. Candidates should also be willing to contribute to ongoing strategic planning for the future of the department within the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Candidates must also be able to support the university’s mission statement (available at mc.edu). 

Responsibilities would include:

  • Teaching four courses per semester, a combination of upper level and core curriculum courses

  • Keeping at least ten in-person office hours per week during each semester and supporting and mentoring students in other formal and informal ways

  • Advising students and serving on departmental and university committees after the first year 

Special attention will be given to candidates who 

  • have at least three years experience teaching secondary English and/or

  • have experience with diverse pedagogical strategies and multi-modal texts.
