Lecturer in Spanish

The Amherst College Department of Spanish invites applications for a lecturer in Spanish, with the appointment to begin on July 1, 2020.  Within the last decade, Amherst College has profoundly transformed its student body in terms of socioeconomic status, ethnicity, race, and nationality. Today, nearly one-quarter of Amherst’s students are Pell grant recipients; 45 percent of our students identify as domestic students of color; and 10 percent of our students are international students.  Our expectation is that the successful candidate will excel at teaching and mentoring students who are broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion. This is a full-time appointment with an initial three-year term and the possibility of renewal for an additional three-year term as a lecturer, which is typically followed by five-year renewable appointments as a senior lecturer.  Reappointments are contingent upon positive reviews.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach three courses (or their equivalent) per semester of Spanish language and culture and to contribute to the long-term health and stability of a small but thriving Spanish program. Requirements include a Ph.D. in Spanish, applied linguistics, language pedagogy, or related field by the time of the appointment; native or near-native language skills in Spanish and English; and a record of teaching excellence.

Applicants should submit electronically to https://apply.interfolio.com/68932 the following: a cover letter addressing the requirements listed above, a curriculum vitae, a statement on language teaching philosophy, three confidential letters of recommendation (at least one of which addresses language teaching), and a sample syllabus of an introductory-level language course.  Review of applications will begin December 1, 2019, and continue until the position is filled.  The search committee will conduct phone interviews of select applicants in December of 2019 and invite finalists for on-campus interviews in February and March of 2020.
