The Department of Modern Languages and Cultures (MLC) at the University of Rochester is seeking applicants for the tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Chinese, specializing in modern and/or contemporary Chinese and/or Sinophone literature and culture. We are particularly interested in candidates who work in Chinese or Sinophone popular culture, film, or media studies, or with digital humanities methodologies; however, consideration will also be given to exceptional candidates whose specialties fall outside of these areas. Candidates whose work spans the late imperial and modern period will also be considered, provided that they have a research or teaching interest in one of the above-mentioned areas.
Teaching load is 2/2. Candidates must have a PhD in hand or expected by the time of appointment (July 1, 2025) and must possess native or near-native proficiency in Mandarin or another Chinese language. They must also have a track record of excellence in research and show an interest in innovative pedagogy and creative teaching methodologies.
The successful candidate will teach courses that support our undergraduate Chinese program and will work closely with other Chinese and MLC faculty to expand our current curriculum. They will also be encouraged to work collaboratively with faculty with shared research and teaching interests in the University of Rochester’s many interdisciplinary and graduate programs such as East Asian Studies, Comparative Literature, Gender, Sex, and Women’s Studies, Film and Media Studies, Digital Media Studies, Digital Humanities, and Visual and Cultural Studies.
Salary range: $68,000-$95,000. The referenced pay range represents the full base range of pay for this job. Individual salaries will be determined within the job’s salary range and established based on market data, experience and expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
Candidates should submit a cover letter, CV, dissertation or book abstract and chapter outline, three letters of recommendation, and writing sample of a maximum of 25 pages (double spaced). The cover letter should include a description of your research and a brief teaching statement. In a separate document, please describe how you will add to the University's core values of Meliora (“Ever better”), discussing the ways in which your experiences will shape your pursuits as a member of our faculty (see Vision and Values statement here: https://www.rochester.edu/college/odos/meliora-vision-values/index.html).
For full consideration, please submit application materials by November 1, 2024.
