Assistant Professor of English (American Literature)

                  The Saint Mary's College Department of English invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of English (American literature) with a specialty in nineteenth-century transatlantic literature, and a secondary specialty in critical race theory. Demonstrated understanding and practice of feminist pedagogy is required. We especially require a faculty member whose approach to teaching and scholarship is keenly sensitive to historical race, class and gender injustices, as well to the intersectionalities among them; who is sophisticated and adept at critically analyzing those injustices as reflected and resisted in literary texts; and who is able to help our students to develop constructive intellectual and creative textual strategies for positive response. We seek a colleague who shares our commitment to diversity, inclusion and social justice, and who is eager to join us in building an empowering academic community for undergraduate women.

Teaching, Research and Service Expectations:

• a 3/3 teaching load that includes: a regular rotation of junior-level survey courses covering every period of American literature; junior- and senior-level topics courses in long nineteenth-century transatlantic literature, which may include transatlantic Romanticism, the black Atlantic, literature of the Americas and similar areas; sophomore-, junior- and senior-level courses in African American literature and Native American literature; regular contributions to Saint Mary's distinctive Writing Across the Curriculum-based firstyear Writing Proficiency Program (https://www.saintmarys.edu/departments/administrative-programs/writing-proficiency-program); after first year of appointment, teaching (in rotation with other literature faculty) one or more of the following core courses required for the English literature major: ENLT 201:  Introduction to Literary Studies; ENLT 385: Literary Theory;  and ENLT 495:  Senior Literature Seminar. 
• an active research and publishing agenda appropriate to a tenure-track position in American literature.
• regular attendance at conferences in appropriate professional organizations to present papers, chair sessions and engage in professional service (annual travel funds provided by the College).
• participation in English Department and College service activities that align with your interests and commitments.

Qualifications:


• Ph.D. in hand required.
• dissertation in American literature required; transatlantic topic strongly preferred.
• experience in teaching both firstyear writing and sophomore or above American literature courses required; full-time teaching experience strongly preferred; training and/or experience in teaching writing to students for whom English is not their first language highly desirable.
• interest in contributing to interdisciplinary academic programs highly desired: please specify your interdisciplinary areas of interest in your letter of application.

If invited to progress to the next round of consideration, you will then be asked to provide the following additional materials by midnight, December 16: evidence of excellence in teaching (a sample syllabus for a firstyear writing course; a sample syllabus for a sophomore-level or above American literature course; one complete set of teaching evaluations from any writing or literature course; and, if obtainable, one Department Chair's, senior faculty colleague's, or Writing Program administrator's class observation report on any course); three current and confidential letters of recommendation; and a 4,000- to 6,000-word sample of scholarly writing. After reviewing these materials, the search committee will select Skype interviewees by January 8, and conduct Skype interviews from January 9 through January 15. On the basis of those interviews, we will invite three candidates for campus visits.
